Vaganova Method

The Vaganova Method is a ballet technique and training system devised by the Russian dancer and pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova (1879-1951). It is acknowledged worldwide as the foremost syllabus of classical ballet.

The method developed in Russia over 300 years ago was derived from Premier Maitre de Ballet, Marius Petipa's teachings throughout the late 19th century.

The method embodies the classicism of the Russian Imperial Ballet (now known as the Kirov or Mariinsky Ballet and is designed and based on the ability to execute and perform all classical repertoire in 19th Century ballets such as Nutcracker, Swan lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, etc.

The Vaganova method gives students a structured, scientific, and methodological approach to dance, considering human anatomy.

Each element of classical ballet is studied in detail through carefully structured lessons. The elements are then made more advanced as the students progress.

The method is technically challenging to master. It requires a serious, committed, and patient mind willing to learn all the nuances of classical ballet, such as port de bras, light balloon in allegro, clean adagio lines, impeccable musicality in complex and varied tempos, and consistent dedication. The Vaganova method is a slower yet focused system that works towards shaping a longer, leaner physique that results in a more refined and polished dancer.
